Additional
Article Info and "Box-Outs":
(This was written in August 2002, so plenty
of the info is out of date. And please forgive me for making the
LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN movie sound in any way exciting...)
HEROES
OF THE FUTURE
DAREDEVIL
Lawyer Matt Murdock (Ben Affleck) may be blind, but his super-attuned
other senses come in handy when he fights crime under the guise
of Daredevil. Jennifer Garner from SKY One's ALIAS also stars as
legendary female assassin Elektra.
THE HULK
You wouldn't like him when he's angry
CHOPPER star Eric Bana
is Bruce Banner, the scientist who starts turning green and causing
big-scale destruction as the temper-driven Hulk, while Jennifer
Connely plays Betty Banner, his long-suffering wife.
THE LEAGUE
OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN
Ripping adventure hits the screen, based on Alan Moore's epic mini-series,
as Victorian Adventure characters like Allan Quartermain (Sean Connery),
Captain Nemo and the Invisible Man team together to defeat a threat
to the British Empire.
SUPERMAN
VS BATMAN
The Dark Knight and the Man of Steel go head to head in this ultimate
team-up movie;- Wolfgang Peterson is down to direct, while everybody
from Brendan Fraser to Christian Bale is in the frame for the leads.
CONSTANTINE
Hard-drinking, chain-smoking dark magician John Constantine spends
his life walking the line between redemption and damnation, with
the Devil constantly on his heels. Originally to be played by Nicolas
Cage, Keanu Reeves will now be wearing Constantine's battered trenchcoat.
VILLAINS OF THE FUTURE:
THE KINGPIN
The heavyweight, devious and cigar-chomping criminal mastermind
of the Marvel Comics Universe gets a racial remix when he makes
an appearance in the upcoming DAREDEVIL movie, battling Ben Affleck's
hero in the intimidating form of Michael Clarke Duncan.
BULLSEYE
Also doing his best to make life difficult for Daredevil will be
rising star Colin Farrell as insanely creative master assassin Bullseye,
a man with a knack for paper-clip enhanced murder and a large target
embossed in his forehead.
THE FANTOM
While the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen battled Doctor Fu Manchu
in the original comic book, the movie version will see the Victorian
adventurers crossing swords with the mysterious and dangerous Fantom,
played by MOULIN ROUGE's Richard Roxburgh.
GENERAL THADDEUS
ROSS
Bruce Banner's alter-ego may be the one flattening buildings, but
the real HULK villain is Army General Thaddeus Ross (Sam Elliot)-
father of Betty Banner, he's determined to bring the green bohemiath
down by any means necessary.
DR. OCTOPUS
Nothing is confirmed yet for the upcoming SPIDER-MAN sequel (due
sometime in 2004)- but it's a safe bet that we'll soon be witnessing
Spidey tangling with Dr. Otto Octavius, the maniacal and mechanically-tentacled
criminal known as Dr. Octopus
POWERS!! FAILING!!
(COMIC
BOOK DUDS ON DVD)
BATMAN AND
ROBIN
Bat-nipples. Ice skating. Alicia Silverstone. Watch in horror, as
Joel Schumacher demolishes the Bat-franchise in ten shockingly camp
steps with the help of George Clooney's flatly unconvincing Batman
and a howlingly awful Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr Freeze.
JUDGE DREDD
"I am duh Law!!!" shouted Sylvester Stallone. "No
you're not!!" replied thousands of angry 2000AD fans. This
sloppy adaptation of semi-fascist future lawman Dredd gets the Mega-City
One look right, but foolishly dumps the comic's wicked black humour.
THE SHADOW
"Who knows what evil lurks in the heart of men?" Unbelievably,
the answer is Alec Baldwin in a fedora and a giant false nose, as
1930s pulp hero the Shadow comes to life in this deeply disappointing
adventure.
SUPERMAN
IV: THE QUEST FOR PEACE (Region 1)
The once beloved franchise hits the skids with this cheap and nasty
nuclear disarmament-themed disaster;- a tragic swan song for Christopher
Reeve's Superman, with shoddy special effects and an embarrassing
"Nuclear Man" villain.
THE PHANTOM
Showing no fear (or fashion sense), Billy Zane dresses up in a bright
purple leotard as the Phantom to leap around the jungle and battle
Treat William's insane gangster. Plenty of production design, a
total absence of thrills.
