Work

Welcome to the Work section of the site – here, you'll find the specific information relating to my work as a Freelance Proofreader and Manuscript Reader. For more about my background, you can check the About and CV pages, while the links below will take you to specific details about my work.

My speciality is commercial genre fiction, dealing with everything from gritty thrillers to science fiction, but I've got a broad knowledge of writing and storytelling in general, and am willing to work on any kind of project. If you've got a writing project that you're struggling to complete, I can help. Whether it's simply acting as a new pair of eyes by doing a reading report, giving the relevant manuscript a polish, giving suggestions on story structure and plot, or proofreading text before publication, I'll be able to give you a professional level of service and do all I can to help achieve your goals. I can't guarantee that you'll be published, but I can do everything I can to tidy and shape your work so that it has the best possible chance.

READING REPORTS

Sometimes on a project, what you need is a brand new pair of eyes. In the case of a Reading Report, I'll act as exactly that – I will read your manuscript from start to finish, and give you a written report on what I think of it, both its strengths and its weaknesses. It'll be a tidy, polite and professional report, but it will also be completely honest and frank where necessary. The world of publishing can be a very difficult one where the standards are extremely high, and I will be prepared to point out whatever problems I feel are present in the manuscript if I feel it'll give you a better chance of eventually getting published. I can't guarantee that you'll like or agree with what I say – but my top priority will be finding a way of turning your manuscript into a publishable novel.

I offer two types of report – Basic, and Detailed. On the Basic report, I will read the manuscript and give you general feedback, usually running to 1-2 pages, telling you where the major problems in the manuscript lie, and what possible improvements can be made. On the Detailed report, I will go much further in depth on the book, charting all the strengths and problems, and also go into much more detail on potential solutions to the issues in the manuscript, up to and including suggestions on plot, character and story structure.

PROOFREADING

Proofreading is the final stage of the process, where the project is given its final thorough check before being completed. In the case of books, it's a matter or checking the text for everything from spelling and grammar to punctuation, looking for possible typesetting errors, inconsistencies, mistakes in the layout or design, and any other issues that may not have been picked up by previous edits and copy-edits. It's giving the work a final tidy, and ensuring that no glaring mistakes are left in the end product.

TESTIMONIALS

‘Saxon is an extremely reliable and thorough proofreader. There isn’t much that gets by his eagle eye!’

Natalie Braine, Orion Fiction

"Over a number of years, Saxon Bullock has done reading (text assessment) as well as editorial work and structural recommendations on a wide variety of texts for me, and I have always been impressed by his insight and grateful for his intelligent and perceptive critiques, no less than his ability to assess a book narratively and stylistically within the context of its potential market. A highy recommended and reliable freelancer."

Peter Lavery, formerly editorial director
of Pan Macmillan and Tor UK

"Saxon’s experience of the genre is in-depth and diverse. He brings this knowledge to the work he completes and is able to offer a valued opinion about whether a manuscript has any potential, and then insightful suggestions for improvements and changes."

Julie Crisp, Editor, Tor UK imprint, Pan Macmillan

"Quick, efficient and with a sharp eye, Saxon has proved a reliable proofreader – and, even better, one with an interest in our novels"

Gillian Redfearn, Senior Comissioning Editor, Gollancz

"A reliable freelancer who's both fast and professional, Saxon's instincts and opinions on a manuscript are always useful, considered, and intelligent."

Jeremy Trevathan, Publishing Director, Pan Macmillan

MY RATES

Every project is different – if you have something you would like me to work on, please e-mail me with the full details, including page count. For Reading Reports, please state clearly whether you want a Basic or Detailed report and the length of the work, and I will be able to give you a price quote. (The average rate for a Basic Report is £60 – while any rates for Detailed Reports will be dependant on the length of the piece. Please e-mail me with any enquiries.)

For Proofreading, it will be difficult to give a quote without first looking at the project itself. There are many factors that can alter how long a particular set of work will take, and what manner you would like the work done in (whether you are providing hard copy, or asking that the work is done on the file provided). Once I've seen a sample of the work, I'll be able to provide you with a quote which will include the hourly rate, the level of work the project will involve, and an estimate of the time it will take to complete.

If you have any questions or queries, please don't hesitate to contact me.
